Trips and GPS tracking

The Dashboard shows your trips as a list next to a map. Select a trip to open its details with the route, start and destination, distance, duration, category and history.

Recording trips

Trips are usually recorded with the Android app, which uploads the GPS points through the REST API – including trips recorded offline and trips started automatically via Bluetooth. Other compatible clients can use the same API, which also accepts GPX and CSV imports.

Each trip keeps the time zone in which it was recorded, so its times are always shown in the local time of the trip, including daylight saving time.

Adding a trip manually

Use + Add trip above the trip list to enter a trip you did not record, for example when you forgot your phone:

  • vehicle and trip type,
  • start and arrival date and time (entered in your browser's time zone, which is stored with the trip),
  • start and destination address, with suggestions from your saved places and the address search,
  • distance, purpose and note.

If the administrator has set up a routing service, Calculate distance fills in the road distance between the two addresses. To refine the route afterwards, open the trip in the trip editor.

Categories, purpose and tags

Every trip has a type – business, private, commute or unclassified – and optionally a special category (medical, volunteering, education / studies, job application, moving, other). The special category does not change the tax meaning of the trip type.

In the trip details you also enter the purpose, contact and note and assign tags. For business trips the employer reimbursement is shown as well.

Filter the trip list by period, trip type, special category and tag.

Road route (map matching)

If the administrator has set up map matching and it is switched on in your profile, each uploaded trip is snapped to the road network. The map then shows the road route, and gaps in the GPS recording are closed along the road instead of as straight lines. Use Original route to show the raw GPS track instead.

The road route is only applied when it is plausible: it is checked against the GPS track, and where the routing service has no map data (for example abroad) the GPS track is used. The raw GPS points are always kept. If a trip could not be matched, the trip details show the reason.

Editing a trip

Open Edit in the trip details:

ActionWhat it does
Correct routeOpens the trip editor for this trip: move, add and remove points, change start, destination and times.
Recalculate routeDiscards the generated road points and reconnects your measured and placed points along the road.
Remove single pointsClick points on the map to mark them, or let the dashboard mark likely outliers. The map previews the route without them, together with the new distance.
Fill gaps from DawarichAdds location points from your Dawarich instance to periods of at least 60 seconds without GPS (for example when the system stopped the app). Existing points are kept.
Split tripChoose a point in the list or on the map and confirm. The point becomes the end of the first and the start of the second trip.
MergeSelect several trips of the same vehicle in the list and merge them. The individual trips are archived afterwards.

After every change the distance and duration are recalculated, and changed start or end addresses are resolved again. Removed and imported points are recorded in the trip history.

Trip history

Every change is recorded in the trip's history: who changed what and when, including classification, edited fields, tags, split and merge, route corrections, removed or imported points and map matching. The history is part of the revision chain checked under compliance.

Closed periods

Trips in a closed period can no longer be changed. Trying to do so shows a clear message (TRIP_PERIOD_LOCKED).

Deleted trips

Deleting a trip moves it to Deleted trips (the archive). Archived trips are kept for 90 days and can be restored during that time; after that they are removed permanently.

See personal display preferences for distance, speed and date formats.
